Small Portland Stone Swelling Moulding or Bolection stone Chimney-piece
Modern reproduction
A modern Portland stone chimney-piece of swelling moulding, or bolection form, of modest proportions.
Simple early 18th Century Chimney-piece designed for a small anteroom. Photographed without slips, which would have been present in the 18th Century when such Chimney-piece were more commonly known as having a swelling mould rather than the modern term ‘bolection’.
We produced a copy of this chimney-piece for an anteroom of a c. 1726 London town house. The simple form and small dimensions, as indicated by the scale of the bottle of wine within the fireplace opening, work well within many environments.
